Keeping my eye on this one. Learning a lot from her interviews & projects. She mentioned Research & in general I believe thats key. I believe in looking back & finding out how one did it, then taking it from there & finding out how you can do it better. I look at clothing like I look at music. Quality always wins, but what made a song so good…was it the producer, the artist, or the writer…was it the hook, melody, message, or the sample… Its somewhat like that with clothing for me. I look into that stuff…what did the creative director/designer look into… I really appreciate this interview, because some people who are creative are so uptight about their shit & never share learning experiences. One thing Ive learned was to ask successful people about their previous experiences & how they got to where they are… its by far the best way to do some of your research. In this case I didn’t ask anything, but some of my questions were answered just by reading some interviews. With this being said salute to Mellany Sanchez & The Kith team. Heres somethings that stood out to me….
Have you got any advice for people starting out in this industry?
Honestly, never underestimate the work that you do and never doubt that something you’re doing is always going to be beneficial. I just always say go for the experience and always, always make vertical movements. Focus on going up a little bit, even if it’s the tiniest notch. Don’t do 50 internships doing the same thing; always try to gain new skills. As far as working specifically in streetwear, I would say focus on the classics and do your research. I’m obsessed with vintage Nike ads, I look at those things all the time just for inspiration. It’s always just about going back and seeing how things worked from the beginning.
